In a Galaxy far away, an evil empire is on a mission to recover the stolen architectural plans to their secret base known as the Death star. The blueprints have fallen into the hands of Princess Lea (Carrie Fisher) who has transported it through two droids (R2d2 and C3PO). It is to be taken to the planet Alderaan where the rebel armies are situated. Using this blueprint, the rebel forces will be able to find the engineering weakness to the Death Star. But close on their trail is one of the empire leaders, Darth Vader (voiced by James Earl Jones), a dangerous heavy breathing masked figure wih special powers.

The two droids crash land on a desert planet where they meet Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) a farmer who dreams of being a pilot, and later Obi Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness), a mysterious old man with powers and a lot of wisdom. Through the employment of gung-ho pilot Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and his tall hairy sidekick Chewbacca, the group work together in accomplishing the task of delivering the plans to Alderaan.
